Why Honey?

Saskatchewan Rose

Our girls have been busy - just how busy? Honeybees have six legs, two compound eyes with thousands of facets, three simple eyes and two sets of wings. Hardworking Saskatchewan honeybees fly at twenty kilometers per hour with their wings beating one hundred and ninety times per second. Every frost and rain free day each foraging worker make an average of ten trips to visit more than one thousand flowers. Over the honeybee's lifetime each bee will make only one half ml. (one tenth of a teaspoon) of honey. To make just one pound of honey, a hive of sixty thousand Saskatchewan honeybees will fly the equivalent of twice around the world visiting and pollinating two million flowers. The flavor of the honey comes from the flower species the honeybees visit. Wildflowers, bedding plants and ornamental flowering trees and shrubs, clover, canola, alfalfa, sunflowers, fruit trees and bushes.

Why are we proud of our girls? Healthy bees, long hours of daylight, clean air and water as well as fields bursting with blossoms. Saskatchewan and Canadian beekeepers put their hearts into achieving the highest standards of purity. That is why our 100% Canadian honey is known to be the best honey in the world that other producing countries buy to mix with their honey to improve it, then export back to Canada as the less expensive brands on the store shelves. Look for this symbol assuring that the honey you buy is 100% pure and Canadian. Pure Canadian Honey Symbol

Low cost Chinese produced honey had once been banned from import into Canada due to adulterating additives. Know where your food comes from.

Honey Benefits

It's naturally better for our world. Honey is a consumer's most ethical and environmentally friendly sweetener choice according to agricultural researchers around the world. Total life-cycle studies from Sweden show domestic honey uses a tiny fraction of energy to produce compared to the energy used to refine sugar from beets or cane.

Sugar cane, corn and beets which are used to produce white sugar require more fertilizer, pesticides and irrigation than ANY field crop. In contrast Canadian beekeepers leave virtually no trace on ecosystems except for the beneficial pollination that some fruits and vegetables require from the bees or else they would not produce any fruit. Citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit as well as many squashes are but some examples. Two of the main floral sources of Canadian honey are alfalfa and clover. Both of which fix nitrogen into the soil reducing the requirement for fossil-fuel-based fertilizers.

Honey wins over other sweeteners when it comes to energy required in refining because there is none. Saskatchewan beekeepers just use crush and strain or centrifugal force to spin the ready to use sweetener out of the combs. As well, less energy is required as Saskatchewan honey travels the least distance to your table. By contrast refined sugar makes an incredible journey to reach your table as Canada imports 90% of its' sugar, often originating from laborers working in terrible conditions. If YOU buy domestic honey as a sweetener you are supporting your friends and neighbors and are helping in supporting rural communities right here at home. Your home.

Naturally, Better For You

For more than 5,000 years honey has been known for it's medicinal and health benefits confirmed by medical studies. Honey contains antioxidants protecting your body from free radicals and even a teaspoon a day boosts the immune system. Unlike white sugar that spikes blood sugar levels honey is released into the body at a more steady rate. Consuming honey before exercise increases endurance and reduces muscle fatigue. Honey helps digestion, helps in the absorption of calcium, contain no fats and provides the essential minerals iron, copper, sodium, potassium, manganese and phosphorous. Honey sweetened beverages do not leave you feeling thirsty like processed white sugar drinks do.
